Record heat recorded this summer

According to data from the European Copernicus Service, this summer observed the highest temperature level since observations began in 1940. The period from June to August was the hottest in the last 81 years. The temperature was 0.69°C above the average values from 1991 to 2020. This is 0.03°C higher than last summer's record.

In Europe, the heat was even greater, with temperatures rising 1.54°C above average values from 1991 to 2020. The Mediterranean region and Eastern Europe were the most affected, while some parts of Iceland, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the western coast of Portugal, and southern Norway experienced cooler-than-usual weather.

Experts say that this will not be the last record, as global temperatures continue to rise due to the use of fossil fuels. According to Samantha Burgess, deputy director of Copernicus, «this June and August became the hottest period, as well as the day, of all time since observations began».

Even in winter, extreme heat aligns, particularly, Australia set a record for August temperature – 41.6°C.

Furthermore, the summer ended with the hottest August on record. Herrera's predecessor warns Europe of abnormal heat also in autumn. He predicts that some countries will experience a double heat record.
