Coastal Landslides in Odesa Region

According to Novyny.live: Ongoing soil erosion along the Black Sea coast is causing repeated landslides in the Odesa region, particularly in the settlements of Sanzhiyka and Chornomorsk. The relentless undercutting of shorelines by the sea has made Sanzhiyka one of the most severely affected areas, with landslides occurring at an alarming rate. Local residents and experts are increasingly concerned that large-scale ground shifts could inflict serious damage on roads, buildings, and other infrastructure.

Landslides have been recorded not only in Sanzhiyka but also in Chornomorsk, where a section of a street has collapsed into the sea. Additional affected locations include:

  • Luzanivka
  • Arcadia
  • Tairove district
  • Stations 13 and 16 of the Velykyi Fontan area
  • Chornomorets

In 2013, the beach at Chornomorets was closed to the public, yet no coastal reinforcement works were ever carried out. This inaction is believed to be worsening the landslide problem.

Environmental and Social Fallout

The Odesa region’s coastline is experiencing extensive ground slippage in the coastal zone, endangering both the local ecosystem and the safety of residents. The situation demands urgent intervention from relevant authorities to prevent further negative consequences.

The persistent landslides along the Odesa coast are the result of long-term shoreline erosion driven by both natural processes and human activity. Without measures to stabilize the coast and without sufficient government attention, the situation is likely to deteriorate, threatening not only people’s lives and health but also the region’s economic stability. Immediate steps are needed to assess the full scope of the problem and to develop a concrete action plan for its resolution.
