UN on the verge of 80 years: is the organization facing a crisis of relevance

Serhiy Kyslytsya, the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, drew an interesting parallel between the United Nations, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary, and 'political Davos'. He noted that during the celebrations, the focus shifts from official discussions to informal meetings with high-ranking officials and important news, which often are not the main topics of UN sessions.

'These are the main news at UN sessions. Does anyone remember what Secretary-General Guterres spoke about? But everyone discusses the speeches of leaders who arrived from their capitals, such as President Zelensky, Trump, and others, who sincerely assess the state of the 80-year-old UN.'

Kyslytsya also pointed out that events taking place 'on the sidelines' of the UN General Assembly sessions, organized by various countries, might turn out to be significantly more influential than the official debates themselves. He emphasized that the formats of meetings outside official sessions are becoming increasingly popular, even though their connection to the UN is gradually decreasing.

Summary: Celebrating its 80th anniversary, the UN increasingly resembles 'political Davos', where the focus shifts from official discussions to important meetings with high-ranking officials. Events 'on the sidelines' of sessions can significantly influence the global situation, but their connection to the organization may diminish over Time.
