Swiss cyclist died after head injury at the World Championship

18-year-old Muriel Fuhrer from Switzerland died in hospital from a head injury sustained during the race at the 2024 World Cycling Championship. This was reported in a statement by the International Cycling Union (UCI).

Fuhrer was competing for the first Time at the World Cycling Championship and had previously twice taken 21st place in the junior race results. In the current competitions, she showed 44th place.

During the group race on September 26, Fuhrer sustained a head injury. She was urgently airlifted to a hospital in Zurich.

The competitions were held in heavy rain, but the organizers decided not to postpone them.

«Fuhrer sustained a severe head injury and is in very critical condition. The International Cycling Union (UCI) and the Swiss Cycling Federation are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updated information as soon as possible», - the UCI statement said.

Death of Ukrainian boxer Arkady Kartsan

On September 17, 25-year-old boxer and member of the Ukrainian national team Arkady Kartsan passed away. He had been in a coma for three days, and today his heart stopped. The cause of the athlete's death is not reported.

Kartsan was a master of sports of international class in boxing and a multiple champion of Ukraine. He represented Ukraine at the 2023 European Games, where he was eliminated in the 1/8 finals.

Arkady was also the champion of Ukraine in boxing in the 92 kg category in 2023 and the European junior champion in 2015.

«He always strived for victory and dreamed of becoming an Olympic champion. The boxing family extends its sincere condolences to the Kartsan family. He will always be in our memory,» - said the Ukrainian Boxing Federation.

Earlier, the head coach of the Ukrainian boxing team reported that Kartsan experienced psychological stress at a tournament in Debrecen in January.
