Lawyer Pushes for $460 Fines and Jail Time for Speeding Drivers.
Attorney Nadia Chukhrayeva’s Demands
According to Novyny.live: Attorney Nadia Chukhrayeva is calling for stricter penalties for drivers, proposing fines of 17,000 hryvnias (approximately $460) and actual jail time for speeding offenses. She represents the parents of 12-year-old Hryhorii Hlushych, who died in a traffic accident in Kyiv. The tragedy occurred on June 5, claiming four lives, including Hryhorii, a kindergarten teacher, and two police officers.
The driver responsible for this horrific crash had accumulated dozens of speeding tickets. This has sparked public outrage and fueled the attorney’s push for legal reform. Chukhrayeva stated,
“If a driver ignores the rules and speeds a second or third time, they should spend up to a week behind bars.”Her position reflects a growing demand for greater accountability among drivers who repeatedly violate traffic laws. Road safety remains a pressing issue in Ukraine, where high-speed accidents frequently lead to fatalities.
The Urgent Need for Road Safety Reforms
The attorney’s demands highlight the necessity of taking decisive action to improve road safety and protect lives. She believes that new fines and the possibility of arrest could serve as effective tools in combating traffic violations. This case draws attention to the broader problem of road accidents in Ukraine and the urgent need for systemic reforms in traffic safety.
The tragedy involving Hryhorii Hlushych underscores a critical issue in Ukraine, where many drivers routinely ignore speed limits. Calls for harsher punishments could act as a catalyst for legislative changes, potentially reducing the number of accidents and saving lives. Advocacy by lawyers and public engagement in this case may also encourage wider discussion and reform of the country’s traffic enforcement system.
