Inna Kardash Detained in Ukraine

According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian authorities have apprehended Inna Kardash, an operative for Belarusian intelligence services, on suspicion of espionage. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) captured Kardash, a Belarusian citizen and agent of the Belarusian KGB, who allegedly used a sexual relationship to recruit a commander from a Ukrainian combat unit. This arrest highlights the ongoing shadow war being waged by foreign intelligence services on Ukrainian soil.

Operating under journalistic cover, Kardash was active within Ukrainian media circles. Her integration into the professional environment was demonstrated in 2016 when she was introduced to a Ukrainian journalist at a meeting of the Trilateral Contact Group in Minsk. In 2020, she further cultivated her media profile by covering protests against Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

Funding and Objectives of the Agent

Investigations reveal that the Belarusian KGB financed Kardash's purchase of an apartment in Kyiv, indicating preparations for a long-term deployment in Ukraine. Her primary mission was to infiltrate the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine to gather sensitive intelligence, underscoring the serious nature of her assignment. Kardash is currently being held in a pre-trial detention center.

Commenting on the arrest, Ivan Stupak noted it represented a significant operational success for the Belarusian KGB at that stage. Artem Dekhtiarenko confirmed that SBU and Defense Intelligence (GUR) officers initiated a long-term counter-intelligence operation against the agent. For her part, Inna Kardash stated:

“The role of an intelligence officer under journalistic cover simply suits me better.”

These events point to active efforts by Belarusian special services to operate within Ukraine through recruitment and espionage. The detention of Inna Kardash underscores the escalating tensions between Ukraine and Belarus and the increased activity of Belarusian intelligence on Ukrainian territory. This case reflects growing threats to Ukraine's national security within the current geopolitical context. The SBU continues to implement measures to counter espionage and expose agent networks, actions which may have serious implications for regional security.
