Prospects of Ukraine Acquiring the SAMP/T System

According to Espreso.tv: Aviation expert Valeriy Romanenko shared his assessment of Ukraine's potential to obtain the SAMP/T system to counter Russian ballistic missiles. According to him, Kyiv was promised delivery of this system for military trials in the fall or by the end of 2023. Jointly produced by the governments of France and Italy, the SAMP/T has already been in service within Ukraine for two years.

Performance Evaluation of the SAMP/T

Romanenko pointed out that the original SAMP/T has not demonstrated effectiveness in intercepting ballistic targets. He emphasized that while the SAMP/T is significantly superior to the American Patriot system, there are ongoing challenges with missile production. The Aster 30 missile, used in this system, has a production cycle of approximately two years, raising serious concerns.

In March 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced an agreement with Emmanuel Macron to secure the SAMP/T system. Romanenko expressed reservations, stating:

“I do not place high hopes on this system.” - Valeriy Romanenko

He further stressed that “the missile problem remains,” which could undermine the system's overall effectiveness.

The acquisition of the SAMP/T could significantly bolster Ukraine's air defense capabilities, especially given the persistent threat of Russian ballistic attacks. Despite expert skepticism about the system's performance, it may become a critical component of Ukraine's broader defensive arsenal. However, missile production bottlenecks that could delay the system's full operational potential remain a key factor in assessing its combat readiness and ability to provide reliable protection in the conflict. This development comes as Ukraine continues to seek advanced Western air defense systems to counter evolving aerial threats.
