Resolving the Conflict in Ukraine: A Path to Peace

According to Espreso.tv: In an interview with The Guardian, Rinat Akhmetov outlined three essential components for achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. He stressed the need for Ukraine to reclaim its internationally recognized borders as they stood in 1991, along with mandatory reparations from Russia to compensate for the damage inflicted. Additionally, Akhmetov highlighted ongoing issues within Russia’s economy, which he noted accounts for just 2% of the global GDP.

The conversation took place in Kyiv, where Akhmetov met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy just before Russia’s full-scale invasion. During the discussion, the businessman stated:

'First and foremost, a just peace means Ukraine returns to its internationally recognized 1991 borders.' Rinat Akhmetov

Optimism on the Military Front

Akhmetov also addressed the current military situation, expressing a sense of optimism. He remarked:

'Putin’s forces are stuck. To me, that’s like a glass half full.' Rinat Akhmetov

He emphasized that he believes Russia faces even more challenges than are visible, adding, 'I think there are many more, but they are being hidden.' These comments reflect his perspective on the conflict and potential avenues for resolution.

Akhmetov’s remarks not only convey his personal stance but also tie into broader discussions about how to achieve peace in Ukraine. The demands for a return to 1991 borders and reparations could serve as a foundation for future negotiations, though implementing them will require substantial effort from the international community. His observations about Russia’s economic struggles may also point to internal pressures on the Kremlin that could shape the conflict’s trajectory and eventual outcome.
