Aldi's Investment Plans

This week Aldi, the fourth largest supermarket in the UK, announced plans to open 80 new stores in 2026 and 2027 as part of a major investment project worth £1.6 billion. The chain currently has 1,060 stores in the UK and aims to reach 1,500.

Among the company's plans is to open 11 new stores by the end of this year, and investments for the expansion and renovation of 35 existing stores will amount to £650 million.

Financial Data

According to reports, the company has invested £55 million in stores in the capital, where four new branches are planned to open in London. Aldi also plans to open another 100 stores in the capital, which will create 3,500 new jobs in the region.

Giles Hurley, CEO of Aldi, stated: “Since we opened our first store in the UK over 35 years ago, we have brought high-quality, affordable products to nearly 800 towns and cities, but there are still hundreds of communities where there is no Aldi nearby.”

He also noted that consumers “continue to face challenges,” and therefore the company is 'focused' on maintaining low prices. Aldi, which is the cheapest supermarket in the UK, has already spent £300 million to support price affordability for shoppers.

Meanwhile, the company’s total sales increased to £18.1 billion in the UK and Ireland for 2024, which is £0.2 billion more compared to the previous year. However, operating profit fell to £435.5 million, down from £552.9 million the previous year.

The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) has warned that food prices may rise by 5.7% by the end of the year, which will further burden financial situations ahead of the holiday season.

Additionally, the 12-month inflation rate for food and non-alcoholic beverages reached 5.1% in August 2025, up from 4.9% in July, marking the fifth consecutive month of rising food prices.

Thus, Aldi's expansion indicates the company’s active intentions to strengthen its market position despite challenges faced by consumers. Investments in new stores and support for low prices may become crucial factors amid rising inflation and financial uncertainty.
