The UK is closing eight stores in October: which chains are leaving the high street.
According to The Sun: Mid-October will bring a serious blow to the retail sector: eight stores will close for good.
In recent years, retail has faced numerous challenges: costs are rising, foot traffic is declining, and consumer spending is decreasing.
AlamyThis forces even major brands to close their outlets or approach administration.
Among the well-known brands closing their stores in October are Poundland, Sports Direct, and The Original Factory Shop.
Poundland Closure
Discount retailer Poundland will close its stores in Liskeard, Tenby, Livingston, and Lowestoft in October.
The store in Liskeard will close on October 1, the Lowestoft store on October 10, Livingston on October 12, and Tenby on October 18.
Major sales have already begun to clear out stock.
Customers are noticing discounts of up to 40% at the Liskeard store and up to 30% at Lowestoft.
“This is absolutely ridiculous,” said one shopper regarding the closures.
The store closures are due to the end of leases or notifications from landlords.
However, Poundland is also closing stores as part of a major restructuring plan approved by the High Court last month to avoid bankruptcy.
At the beginning of the restructuring process, the chain had 800 stores, but now it will have between 650 and 700 left.
Poundland, which has over 14,000 employees, has already been facing financial difficulties in recent years.
The Original Factory Shop
Another major store closing is The Original Factory Shop. The store in Inverness on Academic Street will close on October 12.
“This decision was not made lightly and is the result of a thorough review of its performance,” said a company representative.
The store is also holding a sale with discounts of up to 30% before closing.
Sports Direct
The large sports chain Sports Direct will also be closing one of its stores in October. The store in Rhyll, North Wales, will close, but the exact date has not yet been confirmed.
A sale with a 30% discount has already started in the store.
Trespass
Outdoor clothing and equipment retailer Trespass will close its store in Watford on October 31.
The store has launched a “clearance sale” before closing.
Jarrolds
Well-known business Jarrolds will close its furniture store The Granary next month.
The closure is expected to take place in mid-October, but a specific date has yet to be confirmed.
Jarrolds has not reported how many jobs are at risk.
THE PAINS OF RETAIL IN 2025
The British Retail Association forecasts that the increase in NCS for employers will cost the retail sector £2.3 billion.
Research from the British Chambers of Commerce shows that over half of businesses plan to raise prices by early April.
Three-quarters of businesses indicated that hiring costs are their main financial concern.
The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) also warns that around 17,350 stores may close this year.
These store closures are part of a larger picture of the difficulties facing retailing in the UK. Rising costs and changes in consumer behavior threaten not only small businesses but also large chains. This could have serious consequences for the country's economy if the issues are not addressed soon.
Monitoring the retail market situation will help better understand how these closures will impact the broader context of the economy and employment in the country.
