There are also important deadlines to remember to avoid penalties.

Here are the key dates to keep in mind:

October 1 – Increase in Energy Prices

From October 1, households across the country will face a 2% increase in energy bills.

This is due to a new price cap on energy coming into effect on this date.

The cap defines the maximum price that energy companies can charge per unit of gas or electricity and is updated every three months.

According to the new tariff, bills will rise by £35.14 per year for households with typical energy usage.

Only those households on standard variable tariffs (over 35 million) will feel the change immediately.

Those on fixed-rate tariffs will not see changes in their bills from October but may face price increases after their contracts expire.

October 5 – Registration for Self-Assessment

If you are self-employed or have additional income over £1,000 for the tax year, you need to submit a tax return.

The deadline for filing is in January, but first, you need to register with HMRC.

Complete your registration for the 2024/25 tax year by October 5.

Check if you need to file a return on the GOV.UK website.

Returns are generally required for self-employed individuals or those with additional non-taxable income.

If you do not register or submit a return, you may face a penalty from HMRC.

October 13 – Opening of Phone Lines for Winter Fuel Payment

This year, millions of pensioners will receive a Winter Fuel Payment to help cover energy bills.

These payments amount to up to £300, and most people will receive the funds automatically.

However, some will need to apply, which can be done by phone starting October 13.

The exact amount you receive depends on your date of birth.

Pensioners born between September 22, 1945, and September 21, 1959, will receive £200.

Those born before September 22, 1945, will receive £300.

However, if your income exceeds £35,000, HMRC will reclaim the payment.

If you qualify, you will receive a letter in October or November with information about the payment amount.

October 16 – Tesco Christmas Saver

Several supermarkets have launched programs providing bonuses for Christmas shopping.

The Tesco Christmas Saver program runs until October 16.

While shopping, you accumulate Clubcard points, which Tesco tallies until the end of the program.

In November, you will receive vouchers that can be spent on Christmas shopping.

You can also top up your account with cash to receive a bonus.

For example, when topping up £200, you receive an additional bonus of £12.

October 22 – Inflation Update

The latest inflation data will be published on October 22.

Inflation reflects the rates at which prices for goods and services are rising, including fuel, food, and transport.

It assesses how much prices have increased over the last 12 months, for example, between August 2024 and August 2025.

The inflation rate in the UK remained at 3.8% in August, while food and non-alcoholic beverage inflation rose to 5.1% in September.

Food prices have been rising for five consecutive months, and shoppers have been warned of potential price increases of 5.7% by the end of the year.

How to Save on Grocery Shopping

Consumer reporter Sam Walker explains how to save hundreds of pounds a year:

Unusual Boxes – many retailers offer slightly damaged fruits and vegetables or surplus stock at discounted prices. Lidl sells five kilograms of fruits and vegetables for only £1.50, while Aldi shoppers can get Too Good to Go bags containing £10 worth of products for only £3.30.

Sainsbury’s also sells “Taste Me, Don't Waste Me” fruit and vegetable boxes for £2 to help shoppers save money.

Apps to Combat Food Waste – programs that help stores, cafes, restaurants, and other establishments sell items that are about to expire at lower prices.

Among the most popular are Too Good to Go and Olio.

The Too Good to Go app is free to register and allows users to buy food at discounted prices.

Olio works similarly, allowing users to receive food or other household items for free from neighbors and businesses.

Yellow Sticker Discounts – yellow sticker discounts (sometimes orange or red) are a great way to get inexpensive food.

When you go out to look for these discounts depends on the retailer. You can find information about the best times for each supermarket.

Super Cheap Deals – join Facebook groups dedicated to finding discounts, such as Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK, where shoppers regularly post their finds.

Switching – you usually save by opting for a budget brand instead of premium products.

Switching to lower-priced items, or “switching,” recommended by consumer expert Martin Lewis, can save you hundreds of pounds a year.

October 31 – Deadline for Paper Self-Assessment Tax Return Submission

If you plan to submit a self-assessment tax return by post, the deadline will be earlier.

You must submit the return by October 31.

If you miss the deadline, you will be fined £100.

After three months for late submission, a daily penalty of £10 per day will be charged, up to a maximum of £900.

After six months, a penalty of 5% of the unpaid tax or £300 will also be charged, whichever is higher.

Currently, if you do not send your paper return on time, you have the option to complete your tax return online by January 31, 2026.

October – Start of Sending Letters about Warm Home Discount

The Warm Home Discount program provides eligible households with a £150 discount on energy bills.

This program is available to individuals receiving benefits such as Pension Credit or Universal Credit.

If you qualify for this support, you should receive a letter by mail starting October 20.

Some households may even receive letters as late as December.

No application is needed – the funds will be credited automatically.

The money is not transferred to your account – your energy supplier will reduce the amount on your bill.

To qualify, you must receive one of nine types of government assistance:

  • Guaranteed credit part of pension credit
  • Income support
  • Income-based jobseeker's allowance
  • Employment and support allowance based on income
  • Housing benefit
  • Universal credit
  • Saving credit part of pension credit

Rising energy prices and inflation are prompting people to pay attention to their financial expenses. Therefore, it is important to stay informed about new changes and respond to them in a timely manner. Stay alert to deadlines that may impact your budget and take advantage of available benefits to ease the financial burden.
