Why Diamonds Come in Different Colors: Scientists Unravel the Mystery of Nature

Diamonds have a fairly simple chemical composition - carbon. Therefore, the vast majority of cut diamonds are clear and shiny, although quite unexpected colored specimens can be found in nature.

The News.LIVE editorial team explains how and why diamonds of different colors arise.

More About the Appearance of Colored Diamonds

As explained by Luke Duse, a senior geology researcher at Curtin University in Australia, diamonds can come in different colors: yellow, green, and even pink, reports Live Science.

It is noted that there are ways in which ordinary diamonds can be transformed into colored ones. For example, like other minerals, diamonds can have impurities - elements different from carbon that enter the stone's structure during diamond formation. However, carbon molecules are very small and tightly packed, making it difficult for many elements to significantly affect the gem's color. However, there are exceptions:

  • nitrogen can penetrate the diamond lattice, creating yellow or orange stones;
  • boron can create vibrant blue diamonds;
  • due to radioactive radiation, diamonds can acquire a green hue;
  • after structural deformations, diamonds can have a pink or red tint.

Interestingly, thanks to pink and red diamonds, scientists can study the history of the origin of these precious stones. The study of these colored diamonds may also become a useful tool for science. Scientists believe they can help researchers understand what was happening inside the Earth and how carbon cycles changed throughout the history of the Planet.

Are Diamonds Mined in Ukraine?

Despite the fact that Ukrainian subsoil contains the necessary minerals, no diamond mines have been established in Ukraine to date. According to geologists, promising deposits are located in the Kirovohrad region, as well as in Mykolaiv and Volyn regions.

As a reminder, at the end of 2023, an auction was held in Geneva, Switzerland, during which the largest diamond in the world was sold for over 43 million dollars. Also find out what a diamond looks like in nature.

Ukrainian geologists have identified promising diamond deposits, but diamond mining has yet to commence in Ukraine. The study of colored diamonds helps not only to uncover their origins but also to understand the Earth's history and the carbon cycles of our planet.
