Google Joins Forces with Cypress Creek Energy

According to ITC.ua — Техно: Google has announced a collaboration with Cypress Creek Energy to construct the largest solar installation in the United States, located in Mississippi County, Arkansas. Known as the Steel River Solar Energy Center, this facility will generate 2.5 GW of direct current and include an energy storage system with a capacity of 2.9 GWh. Once operational in 2029, it is expected to supply electricity to over 315,000 homes across Arkansas.

As part of its broader strategy, Google has secured an agreement to purchase 100% of the initial electricity output from Steel River. Additionally, the company plans to build a $1 billion data center near Little Rock, with an official announcement anticipated in early 2025. In West Memphis, Google has already begun constructing a $4 billion data processing facility.

Commitment to Renewable Energy Investments

In mid-2026, Google entered into a deal with Voltus to secure up to 100 MW of power capacity. Earlier in 2026, the company revealed an agreement with EnBW to purchase 100 MW of electricity from an offshore wind farm. In 2025, Google arranged with Renner Energies to utilize power from six wind farms in Belgium, and in 2023, it signed a contract with Orsted to buy 150 MW from a wind facility in Texas.

In 2026, Google also acquired Intersect Power for $4.75 billion, signaling its intent to deepen investments in renewable energy. Currently, the largest combined solar and storage facility in the U.S. is the Edwards & Sanborn Solar + Energy Storage project, which has a capacity of 875 MW.

Meanwhile, Google's competitors are ramping up their efforts in this space:

  • Amazon acquired a 1.2 GW solar project in Oregon in early 2026;
  • Meta signed a contract in mid-2025 to purchase 100% of the electricity from the 600 MW Clear Fork solar farm in Texas.

With energy demands rising, data centers for artificial intelligence are projected to require 123 GW of power by 2035, underscoring the critical need for investments in renewable energy sources.

Google's partnership with Cypress Creek Energy and its other renewable energy initiatives reflect a strategic push to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance energy efficiency.

Against the backdrop of global shifts toward sustainable energy, projects like these could serve as pivotal steps in combating climate change and meeting escalating electricity needs.
