Research: Android Owners are Less Likely to Fall Victim to Scammers than iPhone Users

According to Korrespondent.net: As part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Google, in collaboration with the analytics company YouGov, conducted a survey among over 5,000 smartphone users in the USA, India, and Brazil. The research revealed that Android owners encounter spam and fraudulent messages significantly less often than iPhone users.

Research Findings

According to the data, Android users are 58% more likely to avoid fraudulent SMS compared to iOS device owners. Moreover, Pixel smartphone users demonstrate even better results—reporting spam 96% less often than iPhone users. iPhone owners receive fraudulent messages 65% more often, getting three or more such messages per week.

Explanation from Google

Google experts attribute these results to several factors, including RCS message security checks, Android's built-in protection against phishing and fraud, as well as the use of artificial intelligence for content filtering. The built-in spam filters in the Messages and Phone apps play a crucial role.

Analysts note that a few years ago, the RCS system suffered from a high volume of spam, but Google's intervention has helped turn it into a secure messaging standard.

According to independent assessments from Leviathan Security Group, Pixel smartphones have become the leaders in fraud protection among Apple, Samsung, and Motorola devices.

Google's Future Plans

While this research did not contain new announcements, Google emphasized that the further development of AI technologies will be key in the fight against spam and fraud, and this strategy is set to continue until 2026.

It is reminded that Microsoft previously stated that artificial intelligence has made phishing 4.5 times more effective.
