Despite Russian Pressure, Armenia Chooses Europe: Estonia's PM Kaja Kallas Speaks Out.
Armenia Picks a European Path Forward
According to UATV: Armenia is committing to a European future despite ongoing coercion from Russia, according to Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas. She made these remarks on June 8, 2023, during an informal gathering of EU defense ministers held in Nicosia, Cyprus. Kallas noted that, even under heavy pressure, the Armenian people continue to pursue a course of European-style reforms.
Armenia's Parliamentary Election Results
This statement comes in the wake of Armenia's parliamentary elections on June 7, 2023. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's 'Civil Contract' party secured 727,160 votes, representing 49.81% of the total electorate. Pashinyan has hailed this victory as historic, asserting it will guarantee the development and enduring sovereignty of the Republic of Armenia.
Kaja Kallas emphasized that the European Union is eager to assist Armenia with its upcoming reforms, signaling strong support for the country’s European trajectory amid external pressures.
This development highlights a shift in Armenia's political alignment. Despite long-standing ties with Russia, the nation is increasingly seeking deeper integration with the European Union. Backing from the EU could prove pivotal in implementing reforms, particularly in the areas of democratic governance and economic growth. Armenia's next moves toward European integration may significantly shape its political stability and future relations with neighboring countries.
