Strike on Nuclear Waste Facility in the Exclusion Zone: What We Know About the Fallout.
Ukraine's Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility
According to Espreso.tv: According to nuclear energy expert Olga Kosharna, Ukraine now operates a centralized storage site for spent nuclear fuel, which received its operating license in May of this year. Located within the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, the facility is managed by the state-owned company Energoatom. It holds 105-ton containers filled with spent fuel from the Rivne, Khmelnytskyi, and South Ukraine nuclear power plants. Each container is reinforced with 33 cubic meters of concrete to ensure proper safety standards.
Drone Incident
On June 7, a hostile drone struck a building at the storage site, partially destroying the container reception structure. Olga Kosharna described the attack as a
“deliberate, brazen, and reckless strike”, underscoring the gravity of the situation. Despite the damage, radiation levels around the facility remain within normal limits.
The expert stressed the need for a strong international response to such actions. She warned that if the global nuclear community fails to suspend Russia's membership on the IAEA Board of Governors, it could be seen as complicity in nuclear terrorism.
“This is a nuclear installation,”Kosharna added, emphasizing the seriousness of the threat and the urgent need to protect nuclear sites.
The drone strike highlights the vulnerability of Ukraine's nuclear infrastructure amid the ongoing conflict. Given the critical role of nuclear power in the country's energy security, safeguarding these facilities has become a top priority for both Ukrainian authorities and their international partners. How the global community responds to this incident could significantly influence Russia's future actions and the overall framework of international nuclear safety.
