Azerbaijan Boosts Gas Exports to the EU by 65%: Can Supply Keep Up with Demand?.
Azerbaijan's Gas Deliveries on the Rise
According to UATV: Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Azerbaijan has ramped up its natural gas shipments to European Union countries by 65%. The announcement came from President Ilham Aliyev on July 13 during a media forum held in Shusha, an event drawing 150 journalists from around the world—a sign of the global focus on energy security.
“Demand for Azerbaijani gas has surged dramatically.”
Ilham Aliyev
Aliyev highlighted his country’s growing role as a key energy supplier to Europe amid the deepening energy crisis. He noted that “our gas infrastructure was designed for the period before the 2022 Russia-Ukraine war,” signaling Azerbaijan’s readiness to adapt its energy resources to the new geopolitical landscape.
These developments point to the potential for further increases in Azerbaijan’s gas production, which could bolster Europe’s energy independence and reduce reliance on Russian supplies.
The Critical Need for Energy Source Diversification
The surge in Azerbaijani gas exports to Europe underscores the urgent importance of diversifying energy sources for European nations. As a major supplier, Azerbaijan is poised to help reduce dependency on traditional providers like Russia—a priority that has become especially pressing since the outbreak of war in Ukraine.
This shift also reflects broader global trends toward alternative energy sources and the push for more stable energy markets.
