Wheat Prices Surge After Ukrainian Drones Halt Shipping in the Sea of Azov.
Navigation Suspended Through the Don-Azov Canal
According to UATV: In response to Ukrainian drone strikes targeting Russian vessels in the Sea of Azov, Moscow has temporarily suspended all shipping traffic through the Don-Azov Canal. This waterway serves as a critical corridor for Russia's wheat exports, handling roughly 25% of the country's total shipments of this agricultural commodity.
According to reports, Russian authorities have also stopped accepting applications for vessels to transit the Kerch Strait. These measures follow military operations that, as stated by Oleksandr Syrskyi, resulted in the destruction of 697 targets within Russian territory.
Wheat Market Impact
In the wake of these developments, wheat prices on the Euronext exchange in Europe climbed by 4%. The halt in navigation could significantly disrupt the grain market, with further price volatility expected if the restrictions persist.
The situation highlights how vulnerable Russia's agricultural sector remains to military actions that can disrupt exports and sway global prices. As the ongoing conflict continues, such events may produce long-term consequences for the farming economies of both nations, as well as for international food markets that rely on stable grain supplies.
