Fuel Shortage in Russia Sparks Alarm in Ukraine Over Potential Crop Losses for Farmers.
Russia's Fuel Crisis
According to UATV: Ukraine has reported a deepening fuel crisis in Russia that is disrupting the agricultural sector and logistics networks. Farmers and logistics operators in Russia are voicing complaints about fuel shortages, which are severely hampering their operations. The closure of certain gas stations across the Russian Federation has led to restrictions on refueling, with diesel available only in limited quantities—up to 30 liters per fill-up at stations that remain open.
Modern loaders consume an average of about 8 liters of fuel per hour, underscoring how dire the situation has become for agricultural workers. This fuel crisis threatens to derail planting and harvesting campaigns in Russia. According to Ukrainian intelligence,
“the fuel crisis is now directly threatening the disruption of sowing and harvesting campaigns in Russia”— Ukrainian intelligence. The shortage of fuel could lead to a loss of up to 30% of crop yields, which may have severe repercussions for the country.
Economic Fallout
Wholesale diesel prices have climbed from 107 to 115 rubles per liter, adding further strain on farmers. Small and medium-sized farms are especially hard hit, as they lack their own large fuel storage facilities and are forced to purchase diesel at regular gas stations for what Ukrainian intelligence describes as 'outrageously speculative prices.'
As of July 8, Russia has also imposed a complete ban on diesel exports, a move that could exacerbate the already precarious fuel supply situation for the agricultural sector.
The fuel shortage in Russia carries potentially serious consequences not only for farming but for the broader economy. Given that agriculture is a vital pillar of Russia's economy, the lack of fuel could lead to significant production losses and drive up food prices. With the export ban on diesel in place, conditions may worsen further, raising concerns among farming communities and agricultural experts.
