Banks Block Cards of 3% of Clients: What Anomalies Trigger Protection

According to ТСН: Modern banking security systems are ready to block cards at the slightest suspicion of fraud. An expert explained what "behavioral anomalies" can lead to the blocking of cards for 3% of users.

When Can a Bank Block a Card Without Warning?

According to the expert, fraud prevention programs analyze financial and other online transactions in real-time using statistical methods and machine learning. On average, about 1-3% of payment cards are subject to temporary restrictions from the total number of active clients.

The expert emphasized that card blocking occurs only in exceptional cases and is often a precautionary measure to protect the user's funds.

First, restrictions may be due to technical markers, which are also called triggers. This may happen, for example, in cases of incorrect payment assignment.

"If you are making a payment online, try not to invent anything unusual in the payment assignment: a standard phrase ‘payment for goods/services’ is a safeguard against possible card blocking," explained the banker.

Second, a card may be temporarily blocked due to behavioral anomalies, such as a large number of transfers in a short time or sudden financial activity after a long break.

Third, even technical factors may be grounds for restrictions, for example, the absence of a Bluetooth signal from a trusted device (smartwatch or headphones) when adding the card to a new smartphone.

What to Do If a Bank Blocks Your Card?

The expert also explained what to do if your card has been blocked. First, it's important not to panic, as such a restriction often protects you from fraudsters.

"You should call the bank at the number indicated on the back of the card or go through verification in the banking application on your smartphone. But under no circumstances should you call an unknown number from which you received a call from someone supposedly from the bank. During the conversation with the bank employee, you can find out the reason for the card blocking," recommended the banker.

It is important to note that Ukrainian banks have tightened control over citizens' accounts due to a resolution from the NBU, which allows blocking operations at the slightest suspicion. Among the main reasons are the sharp increase in income compared to declared ones, numerous small transfers from various individuals, as well as transactions related to cryptocurrency exchanges. Special attention is paid to trigger words in the payment assignment: a bank may freeze funds if it concerns currency exchange, payment for goods to a private card, or regular debt repayment.

Recently, banks have been more actively monitoring the financial operations of clients, which is related to the need to protect against possible fraud. The mentioned 'behavioral anomalies' can signal the system, which works on the basis of the latest technologies, that analyze transactions and may activate card blocking. In such cases, it is important to know how to react correctly to quickly regain access to your funds.
