The Experience of Satisfaction from Good Purchases

35% of those surveyed noted that they feel the most satisfaction from a discount on an item they truly need, while 31% feel it from purchasing at half price when the deal is better than expected.

The study, conducted among 2,000 adults, was initiated by Virgin Red – a loyalty program that allows participants to accumulate points on everyday expenses and use them for travel, entertainment, and other experiences.

The brand collaborates with neurobiologist Nicole Wigola to understand how emotions from good deals are formed.

Nicole said: “Interestingly, the greatest emotions come from saving on something necessary, receiving a free upgrade, or getting a better deal than expected.”
“This reflects how our dopamine system works: we feel good when we satisfy a need, but we feel amazing when the outcome exceeds our expectations.”

Among those who experienced this satisfaction, 37% noted that they enjoy paying less than expected, while 30% feel confident in their spending.

A quarter of respondents even admitted that they take pleasure in finding good deals.

Ways to Save While Shopping

Collecting loyalty points and using vouchers or coupons are the most common methods of saving (67% of respondents), and 62% rely on discount codes.

52% always ensure that they accumulate points during shopping, according to OnePoll.com.

74% of respondents admitted that they postponed purchases in anticipation of a better deal – for example, when a product was reduced in price or when they accumulated enough points to save.

Three-quarters of respondents actively share information about great deals they have found.

Vicky Simpson from Virgin Red added: “This research shows what we have always believed: saving makes people happy.”
“It’s wonderful that our participants get that dopamine rush every time they discover new opportunities through points, whether it’s coffee, a trip to the movies, or an incredible adventure.”
