Demands for Legal Reform

According to Espreso.tv: Speaking at a press conference, the parents of 12-year-old Hryhorii Hlushych called for changes to traffic safety laws following a fatal crash in Kyiv on June 5. The collision on Chokolivskyi Boulevard claimed four lives, including two district police officers, a woman, and young Hryhorii. His father, Oleksii Hlushych, stated his hope that no other family would have to endure such pain.

Crash Details

The accident occurred around 5:00 PM when a Mercedes-Benz driver, traveling at excessive speed, crashed into an underground pedestrian crossing. Three other people were injured in the incident. The driver was sober at the time but had accumulated 10 traffic fines over the previous 18 months, five of which were for speeding. This record has outraged the victims' families, who argue that the current penalty system for traffic violations is far too lenient.

On June 8, the Shevchenkivskyi District Court ordered the driver to be held in custody for 60 days without the possibility of bail. Current speeding fines in Ukraine range from 170 to 1,700 hryvnias. Oleksii Hlushych noted that the family had previously submitted a petition calling for tougher penalties for offenders, but it was rejected with a recommendation to resubmit it to the Cabinet of Ministers instead.

Nadiia Chukhraieva, Hryhorii's mother, emphasized that the driver had knowingly disregarded traffic laws for years. In 2022, 202 children in Ukraine lost their lives due to speeding-related crashes, highlighting the severity of the road safety crisis. The parents' appeal for legislative change underscores the urgent need for measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Such reforms could help reduce the number of accidents and improve road safety, especially for children. Society and authorities must address this issue to prevent a repeat of such devastating events.
