Closure of Bodycare stores

According to The Sun: The British Beautycare chain announced the closure of another 30 stores, starting tomorrow, after the company went into administration.

The non-operating stores will close already on Tuesday and Thursday of this week.

Administrators reported that the main reasons for the closure were lack of goods and high maintenance costs for the stores. Maintaining all 115 retail locations turned out to be economically unfeasible.

All employees will be laid off during the closure, however, the exact number of layoffs is currently unknown.

After the closures, 85 operational stores will remain.

Bodycare reached out to administrators at Interpath on September 5 due to rising costs and a funding shortfall, which negatively affected relationships with suppliers.

“We would like to express our sincere thanks to the hundreds of dedicated Bodycare employees who exhibited professionalism since our appointment.”

Currently, Interpath is negotiating the potential sale of the business and assets.

Bodycare was founded in 1970 in Lancashire and specializes in selling cosmetics, fragrances, and bathroom products. Like many other retailers, the company faces challenges due to rising costs and declining consumer purchasing power.

Some stores have already launched sales or closed.

Challenges in the retail market

This is happening at a time when many retailers are facing low consumer demand and rising costs.

For instance, management at New Look is considering a strategic review of the company, which could lead to its sale. This year, about a dozen stores have already closed in Scotland and Wales, while River Island plans to close up to 35 stores in January.

Amid these events, Live Unlimited, specializing in plus-size clothing, also filed for administration last week.

Painful retail situation in 2025

The British Retail Consortium predicts that increases in employer contributions to national insurance will cost retail £2.3 billion.

Research from the British Chamber of Commerce showed that more than half of companies plan to raise prices by the beginning of April.

Polling of over 4,800 companies revealed that 55% expect price increases in the next three months, which is a higher figure compared to 39% in a similar poll conducted at the end of 2024.

About 75% of companies indicated that labor costs are their primary financial burden.

The Center for Retail Research warns that about 17,350 retail outlets could close this year.

Professor Joshua Bemfield noted: “The results of 2024 indicate that while store closures were not as severe as in 2020 or 2022, the situation remains concerning.”
