IAEA Demands Access to Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant After Drone Strike on Turbine Hall.
Attack on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant
According to Novyny.live: A drone struck the turbine building of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) on May 30, leaving a hole in the wall. This marks the first such attack on the plant’s premises since April 2024. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which was alerted to the incident, has called on Russia to grant inspectors access to the site.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi described the situation, stating: 'Attacking nuclear facilities is like playing with fire.'
He stressed the severe consequences such strikes could have on nuclear safety, warning of potential risks to the entire region.
The IAEA has said it will provide further updates once its team submits a detailed report following the requested site inspection. This incident underscores the critical need to uphold nuclear safety protocols during wartime and to protect the Zaporizhzhia plant, Europe’s largest nuclear facility, which remains at the center of the conflict.
Safety Concerns
The attack serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by military operations near nuclear sites. Any strike on the ZNPP could trigger catastrophic consequences not only for Ukraine but also for neighboring countries.
- The IAEA has emphasized the urgency of securing such facilities to prevent potential disasters and protect public health.
