New EU Entry Rules for Ukrainians: What to Expect at the Border in 2026.
Visa-Free Travel for Ukrainians in the EU
According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian citizens enjoy visa-free access to European Union member states, provided they adhere to specific regulations. The key requirements for entry include:
- adherence to the maximum permitted length of stay;
- possession of the necessary travel documents;
- valid medical insurance;
- proof of sufficient financial means.
It is important to note that a new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) will be implemented in 2026, which will involve the collection of fingerprints. This is part of a broader EU-wide effort to modernize border management.
Entry Rules for the Schengen Area
The rules for entering the Schengen Area stipulate a maximum stay of 90 days within any 180-day period. For seamless border crossing, Ukrainians must possess a biometric passport valid for at least three months beyond their planned return date to Ukraine. Additionally, a medical insurance policy with a minimum coverage of 30,000 euros is mandatory.
Where can Ukrainians travel visa-free? The visa-waiver agreement applies to all EU member states, with the exception of the United Kingdom and Ireland. It is also worth noting that stays in Romania without a visa are permitted for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
What else should Ukrainians know? From 2026, the EU plans to launch the new Entry/Exit System (EES), which will require travelers to provide fingerprints and a facial image. The launch of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is also scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026. The online ETIAS authorisation will cost 20 euros and will need to be renewed every three years.
These changes will create new conditions for Ukrainian travelers planning trips to the European Union. The introduction of the new rules in 2026 is linked to pan-European efforts to strengthen border control and enhance security. The ETIAS and EES systems are designed not only to simplify border crossing for law-abiding travelers but also to restrict access for individuals who may pose a threat. This means Ukrainian travelers must be prepared for the changes and comply with the new requirements to avoid unexpected difficulties during their journeys to the EU.
