According to Novyny.live: A recent study by carVertical has uncovered a clear link between vehicle damage history in Ukraine and manipulated mileage data. The data shows that cars with prior damage are 1.2 times more likely to have altered odometer readings. This points to serious issues in the used car market that can easily mislead buyers.

Deception by the numbers

According to the statistics, 9% of all previously damaged vehicles were sold with falsified dashboard numbers. In contrast, only 7.6% of completely undamaged cars showed signs of odometer fraud. This suggests that vehicles which have suffered significant damage are more frequently subjected to mileage manipulation.

Furthermore, 59.7% of cars with rolled-back odometers had official records of severe damage, confirming widespread dishonesty in the trade of such vehicles. Interestingly, 55% of honest cars—those with original odometer readings—had also been damaged, indicating that even vehicles with accurate mileage can hide serious defects.

The European trend reinforces this picture: 61% of cars in Europe with falsified mileage had previously been in serious accidents. By comparison, 47.8% of honest cars in Europe had sustained major damage. This shows that odometer fraud is a global problem, and many buyers may face unexpected repair costs as a result.

The findings from carVertical highlight just how critical it is to check a vehicle's history before making a purchase, especially as cases of mileage fraud continue to rise.

These results underscore the need for greater buyer awareness about the potential risks of buying used cars. Consumers should remain vigilant and always verify a vehicle’s background to avoid financial losses from hidden defects or odometer tampering. At the same time, government authorities should consider introducing stricter regulations and oversight in the used car market to reduce fraud in this sector.
