Refugees storm Germany: from which country are the most asylum seekers.
Increase in the number of refugees seeking asylum in Germany
The number of people applying for asylum in Germany is increasing. According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), last year 351,915 people applied for asylum. This is one and a half times more than a year ago.
According to BAMF, the number of applicants increased by 51.1%. The largest group consists of refugees from Syria - 104.6 thousand people. They are followed by those who arrived from Turkey (62.6 thousand), Afghanistan (53.5 thousand), Iraq (12.3 thousand), Iran (10.2 thousand), Georgia (9.3 thousand) and Russia (9 thousand). Applications of 261.6 thousand applicants were considered, and more than half of them (51.7%) were granted.
Ukrainian refugees temporarily receive protection in Germany
Germany accepted more than 1.17 million Ukrainian refugees at the end of October last year - more than any other EU country. According to BAMF, Ukrainians do not have to apply for asylum in Germany. They are usually granted temporary protection.
All Ukrainian refugees who left for Germany after the start of hostilities receive aid from Jobcenter. From January 1, 2024, the German government plans to increase social assistance to Ukrainians by 12%, but some refugees may lose their benefits. German Labor Minister Hubertus Heil stated that those Ukrainians who refuse to work may have their aid canceled - at least for two months.
For those receiving social benefits but not working, the state will cover housing and utility costs. After two months, the employment service must review the situation and offer new aid and work. In case of refusal, sanctions may be applied.
The corresponding bill was prepared by the Ministry of Labor under Heil's leadership. It is currently under government review and will soon be sent to the Bundestag. It is likely that the new rules will take effect in January.
