Blinken comments on Zelensky's 'victory plan': Are the US ready for new steps.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed the Biden administration's unwavering commitment to supporting Ukraine, which continues to resist Russian aggression.
As reported by Voice of America, he said this during a press conference in New York on September 27, 2024.
He stressed that the US has significantly increased its support. In particular, the Secretary of State mentioned the recently announced aid package worth over $8 billion. According to him, these funds are intended to meet Ukraine's needs until the end of the current US administration's term.
"We have made important steps to support the people of Ukraine who continue to defend themselves against ongoing Russian aggression and continue to uphold their sovereignty and independence, their right to decide their own future," Blinken noted.
He paid special attention to the 'Victory Plan' which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky presented to President Biden during their meeting at the White House. The Secretary of State informed that the US administration is carefully studying this plan.
When asked about the possibility of Ukraine using Western weapons to strike military targets in Russia, Blinken responded diplomatically. He noted that the US and Ukraine's partners are considering all aspects of the plan and are ready to consider "additional actions" if necessary to help Ukraine achieve victory.
"We are studying this very carefully, including what we or other partners of Ukraine might need to undertake, if necessary, to help them achieve this success," Blinken stressed.
The Secretary of State also emphasized the international community's support for Ukraine. He recalled a UN Security Council meeting where most countries condemned Russia's aggressive actions and called for a just peace based on the UN Charter. Blinken highlighted the importance of pressuring Iran, North Korea, and China, urging them to stop supplying weapons and other resources that Russia uses to destroy Ukrainian infrastructure.
Blinken also emphasized the need for a just and lasting peace that upholds the principles of Ukraine's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence. The achieved peace should also preserve the country's right to choose its own path of development and allies, as well as contribute to its restoration. The Secretary of State warned against accepting any peace plans that do not conform to the UN Charter, as this could only encourage further Russian aggression.
