John Bolton’s Sharp Critique of the Trump Administration

According to Vox - Загальний: John Bolton, who served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and later as National Security Advisor under President Donald Trump, has publicly criticized the Trump administration for not being adequately prepared to push for regime change in Iran. According to Bolton, American officials failed to take the necessary steps to support opposition groups inside the country, even though the Iranian regime is currently weaker than at any point since it came to power in 1979.

Iran’s Demographic Landscape and the Role of Youth

Bolton pointed out that roughly two-thirds of Iran’s population is under the age of 30. He believes this demographic shift gives the country significant potential for political transformation. He also highlighted growing discontent among Iranian women, especially following the death of Mahsa Amini, which served as a spark for widespread protests. According to estimates, between 30,000 and 40,000 protesters have been killed during these demonstrations, underscoring the severity of the unrest.

Bolton stressed that the United States must actively back the opposition if it truly seeks to bring about regime change in Iran. He stated:

'I believe that if you’re going to pursue regime change, you need to understand what you’re getting into and be resolute in achieving that objective.' - John Bolton

Bolton’s comments reflect growing concern over Iran’s political landscape, where youth and women have become key drivers of anti-government protests. These widespread demonstrations may indicate that the population is ready for change, but realizing that shift likely requires external support. Bolton’s stance could shape future U.S. policy toward Iran, particularly regarding backing opposition movements as the country’s social and political tensions continue to escalate.
