Borrell sharply responded to the US claims about assistance to Ukraine and strikes on Russia.
High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell defended the European Union's support for Ukraine. He refuted claims of insufficient European involvement in aiding Ukraine, made during the US presidential campaign.
Borrell emphasized that the EU has already provided more support to Ukraine than the US. He noted that the European Union has spent over 130 billion euros on military, economic, financial, and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.
Borrell highlighted that although the EU's military aid is less than America's, 45 billion euros is still not a small amount. He also noted the EU's political support, including granting Ukraine candidate country status and the prospect of EU membership.
Borrell drew attention to the asymmetry of the war and the difference in military expenditures between Russia and Ukraine. He noted that in Ukraine, thanks to innovation and the determination of Ukrainians, they are overcoming this imbalance. The High Representative of the EU also supported Ukraine's use of weapons for strikes on legitimate targets on Russian territory.
Borrell called for continuing and strengthening support for Ukraine, stating that a military balance with Russia needs to be established. He also emphasized that Putin will not enter into negotiations unless he is convinced he is losing.
US President Joe Biden also expressed readiness to help Ukraine.
