Boris Becker on Prison: Killer Neighbor, Drugs, and Denied Visit from Klopp.
Boris Becker's Candidness About Life in Prison
According to The Sun: Boris Becker shared his 'shocking' experience of being in prison, where his neighbor was a killer, and nearby was a pedophile.
The 57-year-old Becker received two and a half years of imprisonment for concealing assets and debts to creditors.
EPAThree-time Wimbledon champion spent a total of eight months in HMP Wandsworth and Huntercombe, before being deported from the UK.
Becker stated that during his incarceration he observed no privileges due to his popularity or the nature of his crime.
“My crime was a white-collar crime, as they say, but my cellmate was a killer, opposite was a pedophile, and to the right were drug smugglers and serious drug dealers.”
He was also shocked by the scale of smuggling and drugs in prison.
“I didn’t know that you could get practically everything inside. I’m talking about drugs, small phones, food – whatever you want.”
“Even a little alcohol on weekends. That shocked me.”
During his imprisonment, Becker kept in touch with his wife Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro, which helped him cope with the hardships.
He was also supported by acquaintances from the sports world, including former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
GettyIn his book 'Inside', Becker noted that he reached out to Klopp for moral support, but the prison administration prohibited them from meeting.
Becker received a message from Klopp, who expressed a desire to visit him during his imprisonment, but the prison administration denied it twice due to potential 'excessive publicity'.
Despite this, friends did not lose hope for communication, and the German athletes sent each other text messages.
Becker's experience in prison offers new insights into the realities of prison life, particularly on the impact of popularity on the perception of justice. His stories about detention conditions, as well as support from loved ones and acquaintances reflect the importance of social connections even in the toughest circumstances. This underscores the vital role that moral support plays in difficult times.
