According to Espreso.tv: For Ukraine to unlock new negotiation clusters in its EU accession talks, fighting corruption is essential, according to Petar Tanev, a political advisor at the European Parliament. His remarks come amid recent developments in the accession process, which officially kicked off on June 15, 2023. The European Commission will now prepare an interim report assessing Ukraine’s progress on the required reforms.

A key milestone occurred on June 8, 2023, when EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos visited Kyiv, signaling momentum in Ukraine’s European integration. Just days later, on June 12, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced unanimous support from EU member states to open the first negotiation cluster. However, despite these positive steps, Hungary has blocked a crucial move to open the remaining clusters in the accession talks for both Ukraine and Moldova.

“This is a red line for us,” he stated.

“We do not want to repeat the errors we committed when admitting Bulgaria and Romania. We see how difficult it is to implement such reforms once a country is already a member of the European Union.”

Tanev further noted that Ukraine is making progress, especially given the ongoing war and its geopolitical significance:

“I believe Ukraine is showing progress. We all understand that there is a war happening, and this is a very important geopolitical context that must be taken into account. This is also Europe’s responsibility.”
