The British political scientist explained why Putin clings to the war at any cost.

The honorary professor of war studies at King's College London, Lawrence D. Freedman, shared his thoughts on the refusal of Russian leader Vladimir Putin to accept a ceasefire in the war with Ukraine. According to the political scientist, Putin is trying to ensure that Ukraine can never truly be independent from Russia, and this is of utmost priority for him.

"For him, there is no more important issue than Ukraine. Ensuring that this country can never truly be independent from Russia is crucial for his legacy," emphasized Freedman.

Freedman highlighted that the potential achievement of political goals in the war and saving face in front of partners are important for Putin. The professor also warned that such a strategy could worsen relations with the West and negatively impact Russia's support from NATO and other partners.

The danger of loss for Russia

Freedman also noted that the refusal to accept a ceasefire could lead to a limitation of sanctions and the suspension of economic agreements that Trump had promised. For Russia, such an option is threatening, as a potential military success in the war does not guarantee any benefit.

"A more moderate Russian elite might feel relieved by such an outcome, but given that they have received little for such costly efforts, they would still expect a dangerous reckoning," emphasized Freedman.

The end of the war poses the risk for Putin of losing the support of his partners and bearing the responsibility for the conflict on the Ukrainian front. The leader's decisions could have serious consequences for Russia in the future, particularly regarding sanctions and international support.
