New Role for Taras Kachka

According to UATV: On July 17, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy nominated Taras Kachka to head Ukraine’s representation to the European Union in Brussels. Kachka, who previously served as Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, will also retain his position as Ukraine’s Trade Representative. This dual role reflects the administration’s push to streamline diplomatic and trade efforts.

Key Goals and Purpose of the Appointment

Kachka’s primary mission will be to accelerate reforms tied to Ukraine’s EU integration. President Zelenskyy stressed the need for more detailed, sector-specific engagement in negotiations:

“Important things have been achieved, and now we need to develop more sectoral, detailed activity to move forward on the already opened clusters in negotiations with the European Union on Ukraine’s accession.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Zelenskyy also noted that decisions on four additional EU negotiation clusters are expected.

Furthermore, the President highlighted Kachka’s proven effectiveness and expertise in trade policy, stating he will combine his work at the EU mission with his role as Ukraine’s Trade Representative under bilateral trade agreements with key partners.

“The officials and diplomatic team of the Office will support Taras in carrying out specific tasks.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Kachka’s deployment to Brussels aims not only to strengthen Ukraine’s standing within the EU but also to intensify cooperation with national governments of EU member states to unlock new negotiation clusters.

This appointment underscores the strategic importance of European integration for Ukraine, especially amid ongoing geopolitical challenges. With his background in European and Euro-Atlantic affairs, Kachka is expected to play a pivotal role in deepening bilateral ties with the EU and advancing Ukraine’s accession talks through closer collaboration with member-state governments.
