8 Types of Skin Rashes That Can Be Life-Threatening.
According to The Sun: Many skin rashes are safe, but some can be dangerous if timely measures are not taken. Therefore, it is important to be able to distinguish these differences.
1. Scaly Red Rash That May Start to Peel: Lymphoma
“The skin, like a window to the body, can signal that something is happening inside the organism,” says Dr. Walaayat Hussein, representative of the British Association of Dermatologists.
Lymphoma may cause a scaly red rash that resembles other common skin diseases, such as eczema or psoriasis. Diagnosing it may not always be obvious due to the similarity of symptoms.
2. Tiny Red Spots on the Skin: Leukemia
“Another type of cancer that can cause a rash is leukemia. It is a type of blood cancer that begins in the bone marrow and can spread throughout the body through the bloodstream,” they note.
Symptoms of leukemia may include petechiae - small clusters of spots on the skin. This rash may resemble atopic dermatitis, but the main difference is that the rash in leukemia retains its red, purple, or brown color when pressed.
3. Red Spots UNDER the Skin: Blood Clotting Disorders
“If you notice purple spots under the skin, it may be a sign of a blood clotting disorder,” they indicate.
Flotation, or petechiae, may occur due to low or high platelet levels in the blood, which are responsible for clotting. This issue can be caused by various factors, such as weak blood vessel structures, certain infections, or genetic problems.
4. Reddish Rash on Hands or Back: Cancer
“Dermatomyositis can cause a red rash on the back. This disease can also affect other parts of the body and cause muscle weakness and inflammation,” they add.
Dermatomyositis can be a sign of various types of cancer, such as ovarian, lung, pancreatic, stomach, and others.
5. Red Spots with Swelling: Necrotizing Fasciitis
“Necrotizing fasciitis, known as 'flesh-eating disease,' can cause skin issues leading to gangrene,” it is emphasized.
This is a rare but serious bacterial infection that can arise after a small injury to the skin. It can lead to severe pain, swelling, purple rashes, and ultimately, tissue necrosis.
6. Widespread Rash: Allergic Reaction to Medications
“A large surface rash may be a sign of hypersensitivity to medications, where drugs trigger an allergic reaction,” they note.
This reaction can occur several weeks after starting new medications and may continue even after their withdrawal. Symptoms can range from rashes to blisters and can affect internal organs.
Despite the many serious diseases associated with skin rashes, in most cases they are safe. Other issues, such as eczema or similar conditions, may cause rashes, but the most important thing is not to panic and to timely consult a doctor for professional advice.
