Dmytro Shchebetyuk’s Journey After a Life-Altering Accident

According to Espreso.tv: Dmytro Shchebetyuk, a former Ukrainian swimming champion and now a leading voice for accessibility, recounts his path after a devastating spinal cord injury, his athletic achievements, and his mission to make cities more inclusive for people with disabilities. In 2011, during an accident in Kriukivshchyna, a suburb of Kyiv, Dmytro sustained a severe spinal injury that completely changed his life. Yet he refused to give up. He spent the first year after the accident focused entirely on rehabilitation, training for six to eight hours every single day.

Through relentless effort and determination, Dmytro went on to become Ukraine’s national swimming champion and even earned a spot in the reserve of the country’s Paralympic archery team. As a co-founder of the civic initiative 'Dostupno.UA', he is actively pushing for better accessibility in cities such as Vinnytsia, Lviv, Kyiv, and Chernihiv, working to remove physical barriers faced by people with disabilities.

“It’s not just about the distance to the entrance,” Dmytro emphasizes.

In his book 'Autostopom na krisli kolisnomu' (Hitchhiking in a Wheelchair), he recounts a journey across 17 Ukrainian cities in just 19 days, all on a shoestring budget of only 10 dollars. This experience became a pivotal moment in his personal growth and a key part of his advocacy for disability rights.

“You do need to adapt, but that alone isn’t enough,” he notes.

Collaboration with Ukrzaliznytsia and the Open Road Project

Dmytro also works closely with Ukraine’s national railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia. In 2022, the company reached out to 'Dostupno.UA' for advice on improving accessibility at the Kyiv Central Station. He believes the key is to constantly ask oneself: “What can I do in this situation?” That question has been the driving force behind all his initiatives.

Dmytro Shchebetyuk continues to fight for the rights of people with disabilities, striving to make Ukraine a more inclusive country for everyone. The progress made in accessibility over the past 15 years shows that real change is possible when people work together.
