Merz stated that German troops will not be in Ukraine even after the ceasefire.
According to ТСН: The Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, commented on the results of the 'coalition of the willing' meeting in Paris, stating that German troops will not be deployed on the territory of Ukraine, even if a ceasefire agreement is reached.
According to BILD, Merz allows for the possibility of further discussion on this issue in Germany. However, final decisions on the nature and scope of security support for Ukraine will be made by the government and the Bundestag once the terms of the ceasefire become known.
“Germany will continue to contribute - politically, financially, and militarily,” emphasized Merz.
At the outset of the press conference following the meeting, Merz and U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff were absent when French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a joint declaration of intent to create international forces in Ukraine after the ceasefire is approved.
Earlier, it was reported that some German politicians do not rule out the possibility of Bundeswehr troops participating in a potential peacekeeping mission in Ukraine.
Foreign troops in Ukraine
In Paris, Ukraine, France, and Great Britain signed a declaration on the deployment of Western forces after the ceasefire. Foreign troops will engage in 'stabilization measures in the air, at sea, and on land', as well as assist in 'restoring the Armed Forces of Ukraine'.
French President Emmanuel Macron noted that the signed declaration stipulates the creation of multinational forces to ensure security. It was also agreed that the number of Ukrainian military personnel after the war will be up to 800,000.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reported that London and Paris plan to deploy their armed forces on the territory of Ukraine immediately after a peace agreement is reached to ensure stability and strengthen security guarantees.
This meeting in Paris was an important step in forming international support for Ukraine. The participating countries confirmed their intention to strengthen security in the region, which is particularly relevant in light of the ongoing war. The authenticity of international cooperation in the field of defense capabilities can significantly impact the further development of the situation in Ukraine.
