Can a link or reference on the internet be called a 'call'? Explanation by a linguist.

The Ukrainian language has the verb 'to call', which means to indicate something for confirmation of something (a synonym for 'to refer'). However, there is a neologism 'call' which is suggested to be used to denote a link. Nevertheless, the word 'call' is not recorded in dictionaries, and it means an internal urge, calling or inclination towards a certain matter. Each person decides for themselves whether to use this word in the sense of referencing a site or an excerpt from text or not.

I do not use it because I do not like unwanted homonymy. If in oral speech the homographs 'call' and 'call' can be distinguished by stress, then in writing it is impossible to avoid polysemy, - explains the linguist.

Moreover, the word 'call' in the sense of 'reference to someone/something' is only recorded in Izyumov's dictionaries and the dictionaries of Doroshenko, Stanislavsky, Strashkevich (1930). In other dictionaries, the form with that stress is presented as a synonym for 'proclamation', 'declaration'.

Linguist Olga Vasylieva clarified that the use of the expression 'to leave life' to announce a person's death or 'to go to the light' is a euphemism. They are used in a high style of speech, especially when it comes to prominent figures. It is noted that the use of these phrases is justified in similar contexts.

A discussion arose among linguists regarding the correct address to the residents of Sumy.
