Demographic Shifts in Ukraine During the First Half of 2026

According to Espreso.tv: Between January and June 2026, Ukraine recorded 73,292 live births and 259,853 deaths. This represents a 16% decline in births compared to the same period in 2025, continuing a long-term downward trend. On average, around 12,000 children are born each month—a sharp drop from roughly 32,000 monthly births a decade ago. These figures highlight the country's ongoing demographic challenges, exacerbated by war, economic strain, and migration.

Among newborns, boys account for 51% and girls for 49%. However, regional disparities are stark. In Donetsk Oblast, births fell by a factor of three, while Zaporizhzhia Oblast saw a 23% decrease. Vinnytsia, Lviv, and Ternopil Oblasts each recorded a 20% decline in birth rates.

Mortality Trends and Regional Variations

Mortality also rose, increasing by 4% compared to the first half of 2025. In Kyiv, 20,121 deaths were reported over the six-month period. Dnipropetrovsk Oblast had the highest death toll at 28,386. Overall, the ratio of births to deaths in 2026 stands at 1 to 4.

Some regions face even more severe imbalances. In Donetsk Oblast, the ratio of newborns to deaths is 1 to 19; in Kherson Oblast, it is 1 to 14; and in Sumy, Chernihiv, and Kharkiv Oblasts, it is 1 to 6. By contrast, Rivne, Volyn, and Zakarpattia Oblasts have a less extreme ratio of 1 to 2. These figures underscore the profound demographic pressures confronting Ukraine.

The combination of falling birth rates and rising mortality points to deep-rooted socioeconomic issues that demand urgent attention.
