Zelensky on security guarantees: there is no clear answer from partners yet.
According to ТСН: President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged that he cannot simply and unequivocally answer the question about the readiness of European partners to protect Ukraine in the event of new aggression from Russia.
He expressed this opinion while responding to questions from journalists about the role of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom in the 'coalition of the willing'.
“It is a very complex question, to which I would very much like, especially myself, to receive a very simple answer — yes, if there is again aggression, all partners will give a strong answer to the Russians,” Zelensky noted.
The president emphasized that he constantly asks this question to international partners, but has not yet received clear answers.
“So far, I have not received a clear, understandable answer. I see, you know, as they say, the will, the political will and that partners are ready,” he said.
However, he added that political will without formalized and legally secured security guarantees does not matter.
“Partners are ready to give us strong security guarantees. But until we have such legal security guarantees, supported by parliaments, supported by the United States Congress, one cannot answer this question,” he explained.
Even with international guarantees, Ukraine, according to Zelensky, must still rely on its own forces.
“And even if they exist, we must primarily count on our own forces, on our Armed Forces of Ukraine,” the president emphasized.
The president also stressed that the most important guarantee of security for Ukraine is its own army.
“That is why the number one guarantee is our army, a strong army, a well-equipped army, 800,000 with proper weapons. Everything we need is stated. And this is not only a desire, this is our vision,” he summarized.
Additionally, Zelensky discussed the possibility of Ukraine relying on a 'nuclear umbrella'.
The president's words emphasize the importance of international support for Ukraine while stressing the need to strengthen its own armed forces. In light of the threats from Russia, the issue of security remains one of the most pressing for Ukraine, and relying solely on external guarantees may be insufficient. The significance of its own army and the readiness for self-defense become key in these circumstances.
