Ukraine's accession to the EU without losing territories: the government announced a unique solution.

Ukraine and EU: path to membership
Ukraine and EU: path to membership

According to ТСН: There are no ready-made solutions to the issue of territorial integrity and the possible accession to the European Union in the context of the occupation of part of the territories, so the future decision will be unique.

This opinion was expressed by Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Taras Kachka in an interview with 'Suspilne'.

Commenting on the 14th point of the peace plan, which concerns the territorial aspect and the creation of a free economic zone in Donbas, the official emphasized that Ukraine does not intend to compromise its sovereignty for the sake of EU membership.

Why the examples of Cyprus or Germany are not applicable

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that although there are historical examples of divided countries, none of them can serve as a template for Ukraine.

‘We can quote many examples: Cyprus's situation, which joined the EU during a referendum on unification, or West Germany... There were territorial disputes even between Slovenia and Croatia... Such examples create analogies, but none of them can be used as a mold. The solution will be unique,’ Taras Kachka emphasized.

According to Kachka, the legal formalization of Ukraine's accession to the European Union will directly depend on the resolution of territorial issues within the framework of the peace process. It is important to adhere to the principle of state integrity.

‘For us, it is essential to strictly adhere to the principle of territorial integrity, and no one willingly relinquishes any territories. If a solution is found in this matter, all others are already secondary. Only then will it be possible to properly legally formalize the issue of Ukraine's accession to the EU as well,’ summarized the Deputy Prime Minister.

Latest news about Ukraine's accession to the EU

It was previously reported that the possibility of Ukraine's accession to the EU by January 1, 2027, mentioned in the latest draft peace plan, theoretically exists.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky noted that Ukraine's accession to the European Union can be significantly accelerated.

Slovak Defense Minister Robert Kalinak reminded that Ukraine cannot join NATO, and the country will face challenges in the process of European integration.

The Prime Minister of Slovakia also made a controversial statement regarding Ukraine's accession to the EU.

It is worth noting that during the recent negotiations of the 'coalition of the willing', Ukraine's EU membership was discussed as an important guarantee of future security, but 'this issue was not the main one'.

In the context of ongoing conflict and uncertainty regarding territorial integrity issues, Ukraine's position on EU accession remains important. The Ukrainian authorities emphasize that membership in the European Union is only possible under the condition of resolving territorial disputes, which indicates the internal strength of the state. This issue is not only political but also social, as it depends on the further development of the country in the context of integration with Europe.
