Analysts from the Council on Foreign Relations Kristina Buri and Steven Cook have suggested in an article for Foreign Policy that due to climate change, the Middle East will become uninhabitable. According to them, continuous heat brings with it enormous problems – not only for the region’s inhabitants but also for communities beyond it.

“In mid-July, the temperature in Dubai reached 144 degrees Fahrenheit (62.2 degrees Celsius). At the end of June, in the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, a temperature of 125 degrees (51.7 degrees Celsius) was recorded. This heat coincided with the Hajj season. When it ended, more than 1,300 people had died. And in Egypt, the temperature rarely dropped below 100 degrees (37.8 degrees Celsius) since May”, – the article states.

Another problem, the authors write, is how people adapt to rising temperatures. They move to places with lower temperatures and high amounts of water. According to the World Bank, by 2050, about 19 million people – nearly a tenth of the local population – will be displaced in North Africa due to the climate crisis.

And for people in this region, the destination of choice is Europe.  “The assertion that migration benefits society remains unconvincing for a significant number of Europeans who are against large (or perceived large) numbers of immigrants in their countries”, – the authors of the publication argue.

Notably, July 2024 became the second hottest month in the history of our planet, reports the European Earth observation program Copernicus. A number of records of the highest temperatures, which were recorded for 13 consecutive months, have been broken, but this does not mean that global warming is over. The average temperature was 16.91°C. This is four hundredths of a degree lower than last year's July figure, which holds the absolute record.
