Middle East Crisis Drives European Gasoline Prices to New Highs: Key Details.
European Fuel Prices Surge
According to Novyny.live: Across Europe, gasoline prices have jumped significantly as tensions in the Middle East disrupt oil product supply chains. On March 16, 2023, fuel costs across the European Union climbed once again. The primary cause was Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which triggered a sharp rise in petroleum product prices.
Fuel Costs in Germany and Poland
In Germany, the average price for Euro-95 gasoline now stands at €2.07 per liter—roughly equivalent to 104 Ukrainian hryvnias. Diesel fuel in the country costs €2.16 per liter, or about 109 hryvnias. Over the past seven days, German gasoline prices have increased by 9.9%, while diesel has surged by 19.37%, reflecting a steep regional hike in fuel costs.
Poland is experiencing a similar trend. Euro-95 gasoline there is selling for 6.79 zloty per liter (approximately 80.51 hryvnias or €1.6), marking a 9.1% increase. Diesel fuel in Poland costs around 7.99 zloty (equivalent to 194 hryvnias or €1.87), up by 21.3%.
For context, in spring 2022, Euro-95 gasoline in Germany peaked at €2.25 per liter (about 113 hryvnias). Financial analyst Oleksiy Kushch has suggested that fuel prices in Ukraine could rise to 100 hryvnias per liter, while Nina Yuzhanina previously warned they might reach 150 hryvnias per liter.
Ultimately, the current fuel price surge across Europe stems from external factors directly impacting the oil products market, with potential negative consequences for Ukraine's economy as well.
European fuel prices reflect global trends that could lead to economic hardship not only within the EU but also in Ukraine. — Economic Review
Rising petroleum product costs may fuel inflation, drive up the price of goods and services, and undermine overall living standards. With ongoing instability in the Middle East, these price swings are likely to persist, prompting governments to take action to mitigate their economic impact.
