Odesa Market Sees Dairy Demand Drop as Prices Skyrocket

According to Novyny.live: At the Kyiv Market in Odesa, demand for dairy products has fallen sharply due to steep price increases. Shoppers are now buying in small quantities, indicating a new caution in their spending habits.

Current dairy prices at the market are exceptionally high:

  • Suluguni cheese - 300 UAH per kilogram
  • Homemade cheese - 470 UAH per kilogram
  • Cow's milk brynza - 250 UAH per kilogram
  • Homemade cream butter - 450 UAH per kilogram
  • Young sheep's milk brynza - 300 UAH per kilogram
  • Young goat's milk cheese - 280 UAH per kilogram
  • Feta cheese - 250 UAH per kilogram
  • Mozzarella - 100 UAH per package
  • Fatty fermented milk cheese - from 220 to 230 UAH per kilogram

Prices for other staples are also elevated: a dozen eggs sells for 80 hryvnias, and homemade noodles cost around 300 hryvnias.

Shoppers are typically purchasing only enough food for a few days at a time, rather than stocking up. As one customer, Lyudmila, noted:

“People are buying 300 grams of cheese, 200 grams of butter. There's no money, so they buy just enough for a couple of days.”

This confirms a trend of reduced spending on dairy due to its high cost. Significant price hikes, combined with the seasonal start of lambing when milk supply is low and pasture grass is scarce, are also impacting the dairy market. This situation is causing concern among consumers who are trying to find alternatives to meet their nutritional needs. The ongoing war has severely disrupted supply chains and agricultural production, contributing to these market pressures.

A National Trend Across Ukraine

The surge in dairy prices in Odesa reflects a nationwide pattern in Ukraine, where inflation and economic hardship are eroding purchasing power. Faced with high costs for basic food items, consumers are forced to seek more affordable alternatives, which could lead to lasting changes in consumption habits and affect the overall market. Monitoring further developments is crucial, as this situation may have long-term effects on the agricultural sector and food supply stability.
