Ukraine's population in 2051 may decrease almost by half.
The Cabinet of Ministers approved the strategy of demographic development of Ukraine until 2040. According to it, Ukraine needs a systematic strategic decision to reduce demographic risks and mitigate threats.
Demographic challenges and threats to Ukraine's development are exacerbated by: the rapid decline in population due to depopulation, large-scale labor migration, and the temporary occupation of part of the country's territory.
According to the State Statistics Service, the population of Ukraine at the Time of the 2001 census was 48.5 million people, and according to the Institute of Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences, as of January 1, 2022, the population of Ukraine was 42 million people, and by July 2024 - 35.8 million people.
Taking into account the challenges and threats, the population of Ukraine by 2041 may decrease to 28.9 million people, and by 2051 - to 25.2 million people.
To increase the birth rate and reduce the outflow of Ukrainians abroad, it is necessary to create conditions for the return of Ukrainians from abroad, cooperation with representatives of foreign Ukrainians, and the attraction of migrants.
It is necessary to increase the birth rate for the natural recovery of the population.
According to the director of the Institute of Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Ella Libanova, between 16 and 30 million people live in the territories controlled by Ukraine.
Earlier, Ella Libanova stated that to maintain the population of Ukraine at the level of 30 million people, it is necessary to attract 300 thousand migrants annually.
An interview with the director of the Institute of Demography and Social Studies of the NAS of Ukraine, Ella Libanova, indicates that the integration of Crimean residents will be easier than that of Donbas residents.
