Historic First: Monks from Mount Athos to Attend Kyiv Pechersk Lavra’s Anniversary.
Visit by Monks from Mount Athos
According to Espreso.tv: In 2023, monks from Mount Athos will travel to Ukraine for the first time to take part in the anniversary celebrations of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. This visit is seen as a significant event, but preparations have been complicated by unfinished renovation work and tensions among different church communities. The initial festivities, marking the 975th anniversary of the Lavra, are scheduled for July 10.
In August 2023, the Kyiv Commercial Court ruled that the termination of the agreement allowing the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) to use state property at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra was lawful. This decision added another layer of difficulty to the preparations. At the same time, a three-day cleanup effort was organized as part of the anniversary planning. However, not all communities were willing to participate. As Archimandrite Makarii noted,
“I invited the brothers to join the cleanup so we could tidy the grounds together. But they replied that they had no blessing for it.”
Challenges in Preparing for the Celebrations
Access to the Lavra’s buildings also became a point of contention. Maryna Koval pointed out that
“they cut off the radiators, pipes started bursting here, and no one except them had access to the premises.”This situation highlights the friction between different church groups, which could affect the overall atmosphere of the anniversary events.
It is worth noting that the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is part of both European and global Christian traditions, as emphasized by Maksym Ostapenko. With only 25 years left until the monastery’s millennium, organizers are determined to do everything possible to ensure the anniversary events succeed. However, the scale of work completed and the communication breakdowns between communities may hinder their execution.
The anniversary of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is an important occasion not just for Ukraine, but for the entire Christian world, given the monastery’s historical significance. The challenges emerging during the preparations point to deep divisions among various church communities, which could significantly impact the celebrations. Given the complex situation, organizers must find ways to foster cooperation and ensure a dignified commemoration that reflects the Lavra’s role in Ukraine’s cultural and religious life.
