Can the US deploy troops in Ukraine: an expert explained the real obstacles.
According to ТСН: The idea of deploying American or European troops on the territory of Ukraine currently seems unlikely.
Major General of the SBU reserve, former deputy head of the Security Service of Ukraine in 2014-2015, Viktor Yahun, noted that the situation in Ukraine resembles the formation of a German brigade in Lithuania. Despite Lithuania being a NATO and EU member and under the Alliance's protection, Berlin is facing personnel difficulties.
“Germany was supposed to form and ensure the presence of a brigade of 5,000 people on the territory of Lithuania. They were unable to form a full-fledged brigade for one simple reason — Germans do not want to serve outside Germany. That's about the Germans,” the general noted.
A similar situation is observed in France. According to the expert, French legislation allows for the permanent deployment abroad, mainly of the 'Foreign Legion' forces.
“The legion itself consists of 10,000 people. From them, no more than 1-2 thousand can be sent to Ukraine. What will that give? They will be present somewhere in Odessa,” Yahun explained.
Britain, too, according to the expert's estimates, could theoretically provide a limited contingent within 2,000 troops.
Regarding the United States, Yahun pointed out that here, the problem of political procedures arises. Currently, the largest American bases in Europe are located no further than Poland, specifically near Wroclaw. Moving the contingent deeper into Eastern Europe, for example, to Lviv, will require serious political decisions.
“To make a radical decision about deploying them even in Lviv, a decision is needed not only from the president but also confirmation at the legislative level either in Congress or in the Senate,” Viktor Yahun concluded.
The expert emphasized that currently, significant allied military presence directly in Ukraine should not be expected.
Recall that Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced significant progress in negotiations regarding the end of the war in Ukraine. According to him, the United States is officially ready to participate in ensuring Ukraine's security after achieving peace, which involves even the presence of an American contingent on the lines of demarcation.
In this context, it is worth noting that international support for Ukraine depends not only on the allies' readiness to send troops but also on the political situation in each country. This complicates the decision-making process and may delay real changes in military support for Ukraine.
