Keep Calm Amid the UPA Dispute, Ukraine’s Former Ambassador to Poland Urges.
Why Maintaining Composure Matters in Ukraine-Poland Relations
According to Espreso.tv: Andrii Deshchytsia, a diplomat and former Ukrainian foreign minister, has called for restraint in the growing tensions between Ukraine and Poland. The conflict stems from a recent decision to rename a special operations unit after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). This move has sparked a heated diplomatic row, with both sides exchanging strong statements.
Deshchytsia, who served as Ukraine’s ambassador to Poland from 2014 to 2022, emphasized the need to “keep calm and set emotions aside.” He argued that a constructive dialogue is essential to prevent the dispute from damaging bilateral ties.
Rising Tensions
The situation escalated on May 26, 2023, when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree granting the honorary title “named after the heroes of the UPA” to the Separate Special Operations Center ‘North.’ This decision provoked outrage in Poland. On May 29, 2023, Polish President Karol Nawrocki announced his intention to strip Zelensky of Poland’s highest state award.
On June 2, 2023, Polish Deputy Speaker of the Sejm Krzysztof Bosak called for blocking Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. In response, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha urged both nations to seek common ground, stressing the importance of maintaining good neighborly relations.
The dispute has drawn attention beyond diplomatic circles. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented on the conflict, stating:
“If we quarrel over the past, someone else will win the future.”
According to Włodzimierz Czarzasty, it is in Poland’s interest to maintain strong ties with Ukraine. His remarks underscore that despite the current disagreements, both countries share common goals that require mutual support.
Ultimately, both sides must work to resolve the conflict and preserve stability in their bilateral relations. Such efforts could have a positive impact on the future of both Ukraine and Poland.
Ukraine-Poland relations hold strategic importance, especially regarding European integration and regional security. While historical disputes can strain cooperation, constructive dialogue and a commitment to neighborly ties are essential for stability. In today’s challenging environment, focusing on shared interests and pursuing mutual understanding can strengthen Ukraine’s position on the global stage.
