France Extends Nuclear Umbrella to Norway as Prime Minister Støre Arrives in Paris.
Norway and France Sign Landmark Defense Agreement
According to Espreso.tv: On May 27, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre traveled to Paris to finalize a new defense pact with France, bringing Norway under the protection of France’s nuclear umbrella. This agreement marks a significant step in bolstering European security, particularly in response to the shifting geopolitical landscape.
French President Emmanuel Macron has repeatedly stressed the importance of nuclear deterrence in Europe. Earlier, on February 13, Friedrich Merz, leader of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union party, announced discussions on European nuclear deterrence. In March, Macron revealed plans to expand the number of nuclear warheads in France’s arsenal, and on April 21, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed Poland’s inclusion in France’s nuclear deterrence framework.
Støre’s Remarks on the Pact
Støre explained, 'We are taking this step in light of the security policy situation in Europe, including Russia’s massive rearmament—even in the nuclear domain—and its full-scale war against another European country.' At the same time, he assured that 'under peaceful conditions, Norway will not host any nuclear weapons.' These statements highlight Oslo’s cautious approach to nuclear security in the region.
This Norway-France agreement could become a key pillar of Europe’s collective security strategy, especially amid rising tensions with Russia. The signing reflects a growing determination among European nations to strengthen defense alliances and nuclear deterrence, which may shape future political and military decisions across the continent.
