30 people detained in Tenerife due to a large-scale theft of tourists' luggage.
The Scandal of Thefts at Tenerife Airport
According to The Sun: Tourists arriving at the popular resort have become victims of a shocking scandal involving thefts at the airport.
The Spanish police uncovered a large gang of suitcase thieves at Tenerife Airport, conducting a dramatic raid this week.
SolarpixThe police reported that 30 people were detained in connection with a large theft that affected hundreds of passengers, including British tourists. They also seized tens of thousands of pounds worth of stolen items from a jewelry store on the island.
The Theft Scheme
The group deliberately stole items from suitcases during their loading or unloading from planes on the southern runway. It is believed that airport employees were involved in this activity, going through the luggage to find valuable items that were then sold on the black market.
Security sources told Canarian Weekly that the culprits were looking for items such as luxury watches, jewelry, smartphones, and other electronic devices.
The Civil Guard believes it has managed to uncover this scheme, although further arrests may follow.
Safety Measures for Tourists
Tourists are advised to keep their valuables with them rather than in luggage. One frequent visitor to Tenerife noted:
“We are in shock. We are aware of organized crime on the island and the thefts of luggage at the airport, but the scale of this is very alarming.”
The investigation began after numerous complaints about missing valuables. The operation, which started on Tuesday, included coordinated searches in several areas of the terminal, including a jewelry store in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

“The Civil Guard has arrested 30 individuals involved in many luggage thefts from travelers using Tenerife Airport.”
A total of 85 people have already been interrogated in connection with these serious criminal offenses.
Airport Security Control
This is not the first scandal involving this airport. In December 2023, 14 people were arrested and another 20 interrogated in connection with a similar luggage theft scheme.
The police urge passengers to keep valuables in carry-on luggage rather than checked baggage, as they continue their fight against crime at the airport.
Millions of passengers pass through Tenerife Airport each year – both tourists and locals conducting business trips, training, or vacations.
